Railroading in Memphis has a long history that dates back to the years leading up to the completion of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad in 1857. The railroads helped shape Memphis and surrounding areas and are still a visible part of the community. Today Memphis is one of only three major cities in North America served by five of the seven remaining Class I railroads. It is no wonder that the hobby of model railroading is popular in the area.
Memphis Model Railroaders is not a single organization or club. It is an informal group of several independent model railroading organizations that are active in the Mid-South and cooperate in various endeavors. Its main purpose is to bring attention to these organizations and their activities with the hope of getting more people involved.
